Private Arthur Tibbs, age 20. Born in Teignmouth 18 September 1894 and baptised on 4 November at St. James' Church, the son of Harry, mason, and Ellen Tibbs, Brook Hill, Teignmouth.

He was shown on 1901 census living with his parents and siblings at Willey Lane and again on the 1911 census now working as a mason.

Arthur attested on 26 August 1914 with the 8th Service Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, army service number 10285. Whilst training at Aldershot Camp in Hampshire he became ill with a cough which worsened over several months and eventually was admitted to Cambridge Hospital on 11 March 1915.

 

Arthur was discharged on 15 April 1915 with tuberculosis of the lungs. He was awarded a pension for 12 months of 12s.6d a week but died at home on 22 July 1915.

Buried in Teignmouth Cemetery on 24 July.
