Private Jack Salter Street age 25.
Born 1892 in Teignmouth, Devon the youngest son of Albert, fish porter, and Maria Street. In 1901 the family were living in Dagmar Street, Shaldon. In 1911 he was living with his parents and siblings at 20 Saxe Street and working as a gardener.
A territorial in 2/6th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, service number 3200, he was called up at the beginning of war. After serving in Egypt Jack went to Mesopotamia, landing in Basra in January 1916 with 1/6th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, service number 266463.
He became ill during the summer of 1917 and his parents received a telegram in July reporting that their son was lying seriously ill with fever in Mesopotamia. They were later informed that Jack had died on 26 July 1917.

One of Jack’s brothers serving in the Dublin Fusiliers was taken POW in 1914 and was the first casualty of war notified. Another brother was a Sergeant serving in the same regiment as Jack but was stationed in India.
Gratuities totalling £27.1s.11d were paid to his father during 1918-1920.
