Private Arthur (Archie) John George Sharam age 32.
Arthur was born at Teignmouth in 1883, the son of Thomas and Emma Sharam. In 1891 Emma, a widow, Archie and his family were living at 36 Teign Street, his father had died in 1890.
He attended the Wesleyan Methodist School in Teignmouth.
On the 1901 and 1911 census Archie was shown living and working in Caterham as a draper for his brother-in-law who owned a draper's business.
In March 1914 he married Thirza Henrietta Ashdown, at Oxted, Surrey and their son Thomas Arthur was born that year.
Archie was a member of the National Reserve and enlisted in Kingston, Surrey, at the outbreak of war.

By December 1914 he was serving in France with the 1st Battalion, East Surrey Regiment, service number 1014.
He had been wounded at Hill 60 in 1915.
Archie was killed by machine gun fire in action south east of Carnoy on 25 September 1916.

"Mrs Westcott of Teign Street, Teignmouth, has also received intimation of the death of her son Pte. Archie Sharam, of the East Surreys from the National Reserve a month after the outbreak of war and was entering upon his third winter in the trenches. Having joined for the period of the war only, he refused non-commissioned rank. Pte. Sharman, who had only been home on leave once since going to France, was wounded in the Hill 60 battle, and now met his death by machine-gun fire. He was 33 years of age and leaves a wife and one child. His brother, Corpl. T. Sharam, of the National Reserve, is one of the assistant masters at West Lawn school".
