Charles was born in North Tawton in 1882, son of Joseph, a relieving officer, and Susanna Metherell and baptised there on 28th May.
By 1901 he was living and working in London as a warehouseman at Southwark, and was still there in 1911 at Cook & Son, Carter Lane, City of London.
14th Battalion, (London Scottish) London Regiment cap badge.
He served with the 1/14th London Regiment (London Scottish), service number 5432, which would indicate that he joined this regiment in late 1915.
His estate was left to his sister Kate who had married Thomas Strang Hosking and was living in Teignmouth.
The regiment was attempting to take Gommecourt when he was reported missing later presumed killed in action on 1 July 1916. Regimental diaries report that 241 men died on this day. Remembered on Thiepval Memorial, Somme.
