Private Ernest George Eden age 17. Ernest was born on 10 April 1900 at Totnes, and baptised on 29 June 1902 at Halwell; his mother was Alice Anning and single. In 1901 he appeared on the census at Washbourne, nr Ashsprington, with his mother aged 18 and grandfather, Philip Anning. He attended infant school at Harbertenford from 1904 to 1908 where his parent was named as Alice. In 1908 until 1911 he attended Ashprington School and his father was named as John Eden.
In 1911 the family moved to Clayhidon, Bratton Clovelly and he attended school here under the name of Eden and his father was listed as John Eden. The 1911 census showed him living near Wellington, Somerset with father John Henry Eden, his mother Alice and his uncle W. James Anning. By 1917 the family had moved to Teignmouth.
His one military document notes that he was living at Wellington when he enlisted with the Devonshire Regiment, service number 19026.

Ernest was serving with 2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment, service number 28194, at the Battle of Cambrai when he was killed in action on 30 November 1917.
