Mrs Anne Christiana Scargill (née Snell), of Glen Brook, Paradise Road, Teignmouth, Devon.
Anne was born in 1884 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, she was the daughter of Dr. Simeon Snell (1851-1909) of Launceston, Cornwall, and Anne Christiana Snell (née Woodley) of Cork, Ireland (1852 - 10th March 1917).
The census records of 1891 and 1901 show Anne had two brothers, (both later became doctors) Henry Cecil Snell and John Aubrey Brooking Snell, and two sisters, Elizabeth N. Snell (died in infancy) and Sarah Julia Snell.
The 1911 census shows Anne living with her mother (a widow) and two servants (a housemaid and a live-in servant) at Moor Lodge, Rutland Park, Sheffield.
In 1871 the census shows Anne Christiana Woodley aged 66 was living at Glen Brook, Paradise Road in East Teignmouth with her niece (Annie C Woodley), she died a spinster in 1881. This is the house that Anne Christiana Scargill gave as her permanent address when she engaged with VAD.
From 28th September 1915 to 6th January 1917, Anne worked as a Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS) nurse on detachment to VAD in a Military Hospital, France.
In the fourth quarter of 1917 Anne married Harold Brooke Scargill, a surgeon from York.
On the 8th February 1920 Anne gave birth to her daughter, Anne Christina Scargill, Anne died four days later on the 12th February, 1920, she was living in Knaresborough, Yorkshire at that time. Her daughter survived until October 2003.
Anne is buried at St Robert of Knaresborough's Church burial ground, Pannal. Yorkshire.
